Get involved with The Neighbors' Place's community gardens this season

April 12, 2019

Garden_2016_7.jpegThe April snow is going to melt off fast, and soon enough we'll be back to another gardening season at The Neighbors' Place!

It's hard to believe that the time has come again to plant our seeds and make our garden plans but we excited to get our gardens growing! We will again be gardening at our 800 Jefferson St. location, growing produce to be used in our food pantry, which serves roughly 80 families daily. In addition to that is our downtown Wausau garden at 1009 3rd St., which is a partnership between The Neighbors' Place and The Marathon County Historical Society. This garden offers residents the opportunity to grow their own local, fresh produce in their personal garden plot. These garden plots are available to community members free of charge, and in return, gardeners are encouraged to donate a portion of their produce to The Neighbors' Place's food pantry.

It is our hope that these community gardens enrich our community as a whole -- enhancing food security by increasing access to nutritious, locally-grown produce. If you're interested in volunteering in our community gardens, contact our Volunteer & Community Garden Manager, Mallory McGivern, at mallory@neighborsplace.org.

There are also still garden plots available. Apply in person, download an application from our website (neighborsplace.org) or call 715-845-1966 for more information!

Thanks to those who helped us while our truck was down

The Neighbors' Place moves a lot of food. Maybe you've seen our trusty box truck out around the community. Well, when our truck was out of commission for a few weeks in February, our neighbors stepped up to help us, and we wanted to say thanks. Thanks to For-Com Specialty, Crystal Finishing Systems Inc. and all of the great volunteers who pitched in to make sure we made our pickups and deliveries on time. You helped a lot of people get food they rely on!

Are you ready to Par-Tee?

It's almost time for our golf fundraiser, and there are still a few spots left! Par-Tee for our Neighbors is a fun golf outing for groups of four. It's a 9-hole scramble with lunch, appetizers and a silent auction, plus a few surprises. All proceeds benefit The Neighbors' Place.

Par-Tee for our Neighbors starts at 11:30 a.m. May 17at Tribute Golf Course, 1001 Golf Club Rd. in Wausau. The cost to sign up is $65 per person, $250 per foursome. To register and for more information, call The Neighbors' Place at 715-845-1966 or stop by our office and ask for Dave.
