Tom Rau, Executive Director
Tom has been with The Neighbors’ Place (TNP) since 2001. As executive director, he works in partnership with the board to meet TNP’s mission of “People Helping People.” He also manages day-to-day operations and provides direction & support to the staff. Tom and his wife, Marcy, have three grown sons whom they enjoy visiting in Chicago and Olympia Washington. When he’s not at TNP he can often be found on the golf course or ski slopes. He is an avid Packer fan (and owner), a maturing soccer fan and has recently celebrated 20 years as a local soccer referee.
Fernando G. Soto, Food Bank & Food Pantry Director
As Food Bank & Food Pantry director, Fernando is in charge of the safe handling of all food donations and commodities and managing the operation of the food pantry. He also assists with community food drives and collaborates with partner agencies and food pantries all around Marathon County. Fernando is originally from Mexico. He met his wife, Shar, a Green Bay native, when she was in Mexico teaching. They moved to Wisconsin to begin their family (they now have three grown sons) and eventually settled in Wausau. Prior to joining the staff at TNP, he enjoyed a career with IBM. In his spare time, he is a HUGE fan of the Green Bay Packers, soccer, and golf.
Kathy Rubino, Furniture & Basic Needs Bank Director
Kathy is in charge of the Furniture & Basic Needs Bank as well as the Wheels Again program. She works with the different agencies and job developers to help those in need of furniture, basic household items and helping those in need of transportation for work purposes. Kathy also provides job training and helps those in need of transitional living skills. Prior to joining the staff, Kathy had a career in nursing and served on the Board of Directors for The Neighbors’ Place. She loves spending time with her family, which includes her husband, Frank, two sons, and a new grandson.
Marcy Rau, Community Learning Center Coordinator
A long-time teacher herself, Marcy matches students with tutors who help with one-on-one skill development, facilitates sewing & knitting classes to encourage cross-cultural literacy, and oversees the Youth Education program and Provider Storyteller Network – all part of the Community Learning Center. Marcy is native to Wausau. She and her husband, Tom, raised their three sons here. For fun, Marcy loves to swim at the YMCA, spending time with family & friends, and just enjoys being part of this community.
Evan Cass, Volunteer & Events Coordinator
Evan uses his previous experience of volunteer coordination to help TNP’s mission — “People Helping People.” Evan has called Marathon County home for most of his life, and would love to have his family as
his next-door neighbors. Evan grew up in a low-income family and, therefore, feels a kinship with those who struggle socio-economically. He is the father of three cats and enjoys writing, reading and singing karaoke with friends.
Frank Altman, Furniture & Basic Needs Bank Assistant
Frank has worked at TNP since 2013 where he assists Kathy in the Furniture & Basic Needs Bank and is the lead gardener in our community gardens. A typical day at TNP for Frank looks like: picking-up donated furniture, working in the gardens, and being a handyman wherever needed! Frank’s favorite hobbies are gardening and learning more about aquaponics. He loves the country living that Wisconsin has to offer.
