A Special Note about our 25th Anniversary:
2014 commemorates the 25th Anniversary of The Neighbors’ Place as a legally recognized nonprofit serving Marathon County. We want to be able to tell some of the stories of people whose lives were affected in ways large and small, throughout the quarter-of-a-century of service to the community.
As staff people at The Neighbors’ Place, we have the opportunity to see some of the faces of people in need up close. Our clients don't come from one city or one part of the city; they belong to different races, religions, and backgrounds. They are our neighbors—some of whom may be reading this right now.
The truth is that many of us are closer to needing the help and support of our community than we are comfortable to admit. We have seen our clients become donors—and we have also seen our donors become clients. None of us exists in a vacuum; it is a sense of belonging and connectedness to our community that helps us through troubled times. It’s been said that you can measure the greatness of a community by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. By this definition, Wausau is among the greatest communities.
More than two decades ago, citizens of our community got together to create a safe space, a refuge, for people in need. The founding mission articulated a vision in which The Neighbors’ Place would provide a “caring presence to individuals and families struggling with a variety of difficult life issues” and seek “to work cooperatively with existing community resources.”
Those who started The Neighbors’ Place believed that our community would be at its strongest when all members of that community are able to meet their basic needs and strive for their potential. Over time, The Neighbors’ Place grew in size, staff, and the scope of its services in order to better meet the needs of a growing and changing community.
Whether you’ve been a volunteer, client, or donor we want to know how The Neighbors’ Place has impacted your life. We'd love to be able to tell your story to others and drive home the reality that the lives touched by The Neighbors' Place have different faces—and different successes.
